New Game from Tomb Raider Dev to be Announced at Square Enix E3 Event

Does the name Eidos Montreal ring a bell? If you’re a Tomb Raider fan, then it should do. Eidos is best known for working on the Deus Ex and Tomb Raider franchises of games. In Eidos’ repertoire is Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and more recently, in 2018, the Shadow of the Tomb Raider collab with Crystal Dynamics. Eidos went on to further work with the studio owned by Square Enix on Marvel’s Avengers.

Square Enix recently made an official announcement on their Twitter page. The tweet doesn’t divulge much, but it confirms that Eidos Montreal has a game that will be revealed on June 13th. This announcement will be made as part of Square Enix’s showcase at the E3 2021 conference. The E3 event, as a whole, is officially running from June 12th to June 15th, and Square Enix will be kicking off the schedule on its second day.

You’ll be able to catch the Square Enix presentation and Edios’ game announcement at E3 at 8:15 pm UK time. What exactly is going to be announced at Square Enix’s presentation? That’s up for educated debate. So, let’s debate.

Square Enix was the developer that spearheaded all three of the previous Tomb Raider instalments, so it would make sense for them to be announcing a fourth addition to the popular, action-packed franchise. It would make even more sense for Eidos Montreal to be vital to that announcement since they were involved in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Following a similar flow of logic, we could be in for a reboot of the Deus Ex series, perhaps ditching protagonist Adam Jensen and creating a spin-off series. Bloomberg reported that the developer might even be gearing up to announce their Guardians of the Galaxy game, taking the opportunity at E3 to make a splash.

Eidos Montreal’s involvement in a new game isn’t all that Square Enix has up its sleeve for their E3 showcase. The entire conference is being held totally virtually this year due to the pandemic, so you can only tune in through the confirmed links—most likely the developer’s Youtube and Twitch pages—as well as through the official E3 app.

Square Enix is supposed to be broadcasting around 40 minutes worth of updates and announcements during their slot. Also confirmed in their event is more information on the next game in the Life is Strange series, True Colours. This was a saga originally created by Dontnod Entertainment, but Square Enix has taken it on to bring more instalments to fans of the first game.

Babylon’s Fall will make an appearance in some way at the show. This is an action game announced two years ago, yet it hasn’t seen many updates or build-up around it since then. Developed by PlatinumGames, Babylon’s Fall received an excited response, but interest has certainly dropped off. So perhaps this will be an opportunity for Square Enix to grapple back some lost ground on this title.

Undoubtedly at the very top of Square Enix’s priorities during E3 will be Final Fantasy 16. As the arguably biggest franchise in the developer’s portfolio, fans would be sorely disappointed if no teaser footage or information is shared in the showcase. E3 2021 might be the event Square Enix were waiting for to reveal their biggest title for 2022.
