Pokémon Legends: Arceus Goes Open World

One of the biggest pieces of Nintendo news in the last week is the announcement of Pokémon Legends: Arceus. A new Pokémon Nintendo Switch game coming in 2022 will be the first of its kind—an open-world Pokémon game.

Yep, this is Pokémon meets Breath of the Wild; all the favourite Pokémon characters, mixed with the graphical beauty and enjoyment of simply wandering a world and experiencing it as it should be—without barriers or rails.

The new game has hardcore Pokémon fans chomping at the bit. It is set in the Sinnoh region during its feudal era, which means we should be seeing all the Pokémon that are native to the region, such as Turtwig and Pikachu, and the eponymous Arceus around whom the game is set.

The setting is also interesting because it pre-dates Pokémon trainers, meaning you will be setting out getting those Pokémon for the first time (storyline speaking) and developing the Sinnoh region pokédex as you go. It’s likely to be a less technologically-invested world, which plays into the RPG feel of the game.

And, like an RPG, there are rumours that the combat will move from the standard turn-based system to ATB (active time battle), like that used in the Final Fantasy series. What that will mean for the Pokémon fight is yet to be seen.
